New CD lives up to its name

More than 300 polka fans crowded into the WOW Zone Family Entertainment Center in Mankato July 22 to celebrate the release of the Riverbend Dutchmen’s latest album, “Enjoy Yourself” . . . and they did.

“The crowd was great,” said bandleader Kris Keltgen. “We had a really diverse and energized crowd – young and old alike.”

The music and dancing continued well into the night – with the band playing an hour past the scheduled end time.

“The crowd wouldn’t let us quit playing!” exclaimed band member Crystal Malek.

The evening began with the band playing the songs on their new album, and concluded with multiple guest performances throughout the evening.

Myron Wolf of Cleveland, MN played several Hoolerie tunes with the band, and there were also guest performances by Jerry and Jake Minar, Nancy Buckentine, Jerry Kahle, Steve Moran, and Tim Chlan.

In addition to the old-time music, the band played a number of other tunes to keep the crowd energized, which included some jazz standards, 1950 and 1960s, and even some blues.

By all accounts, the evening was not only a success for the Riverbend Dutchmen, but for old-time music in general.

There were many people in attendance who had never been exposed to old-time music before – and it was clear they enjoyed themselves.

At one point in the evening, the crowd started a massive conga line throughout the lounge, which transformed into the Chicken Dance.

The venue was very pleased with the event, as they had never had old-time music in the past. Everybody was happy!

There was a steady stream of fans purchasing copies of the new album, T-shirts, and other merchandise.

When asked why the band decided to throw a CD release party, Keltgen replied, “We wanted to do something nice for our fans that have supported us all these years. We could not be successful without them.”

“Enjoy Yourself” has received numerous accolades since its release in July, and has been called the most innovative Dutchmen-style recording in the last 25 years.

It has received air time on hundreds of radio stations across North America, including XM satellite radio.

The album is also available through digital streaming services such as Apple iTunes, Spotify, iHeart Radio, and Amazon.

The album includes 16 tracks of the band’s favorite old-time tunes, original arrangements, and contemporary jazz influences. It really is a very well done and unique album.

Musicians performing on the album include: Kris Keltgen – vocals and concertina, Crystal Malek – drums, Mollie Busta – vocals, Rick Keane – trumpet and vocals, Jens Jensen – trumpet, Myron Muehlbauer – reeds, Sue Sands – piano, Mike Budin – tuba, and Mike Keinz – bass guitar.

The album was recorded by Ted Lange of Powerbox Studios in Ridgeville Corners, OH. The album was produced by Kris Keltgen.

The cost of producing quality music albums is a very expensive undertaking. Producing an album can cost in excess of $10,000.

Old-time music fans can help support polka music and local bands by purchasing CDs from their favorite groups.
